Steve Grand has just released his first single, “All-American Boy”. Apparently, he is sans record label, management or any type of industry support. He wrote and produced this song because he believed it was his song to sing and his message to share.

In a genre with a demographic that is predominantly assumed to be conservative, Steve Grand signifies the progressive movement of country music to a much more varied audience and reach. He is the first openly gay male country musician and believes his voice will speak for so many country music consumers who have struggled with their sexual identity.

According to Buzzfeed, Steve Grand wrote this upon the release of his song: “time to be brave. the world does not see change until it sees honesty. I am taking a risk here in many ways, but really there is no choice but to be brave. To not tell this story is to let my soul die. It is all I believe in. It is all I hold dear. We have all longed for someone we can never have… we all have felt that ache for our ‎#allamericanboy

first original song and music video. I gave everything for this. If my story makes even a couple people feel less alone in their aching, all the blood, sweat, tears, and soul I put into this project makes it worth it. Thanks for watching.”

This a powerful statement for both the LGBTQ and country music community. In the wake of Frank Ocean’s impact on the R&B community and the recent SCOTUS ruling, equal rights has seen incredible leaps and bounds in both music and legislation this year alone. Steve Grand’s brave venture is yet another important bound forward.

RYOT NOTE: We are so proud of our country as it continues to move towards equality and empowerment. The rights of the LGBTQ community are human rights and musicians like Steve Grand continue to keep that discussion on the table. The Human Rights Campaign is committed to doing the same. They believe in the day when all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, can feel comfortable in their homes, schools and workplaces. Click the gray box, donate and Become the News!
