Times Square is normally so obnoxiously lit with advertisements and video screens that it’s nearly impossible to tell night from day.

But in a moment of solidarity with millions of people around the world, New Yorkers let their most iconic square go dark in celebration of Earth Hour on Saturday.

Even though a few jerks chose not to participate — clearly the attention whores of the advertising world — check out what Times Square and some other amazing global landmarks look like with the lights turned off:
