Just how good are plastic surgeons in South Korea? Well for starters, South Korean media outlets Onboa and Munhwa have reported that many people now need plastic surgery certificates to prove they actually are who they say they are.

As a nation that boasts highest rates of plastic surgery of any country in the world,  recent boom in plastic surgery tourism from nearby countries like China and Japan means many of these foreigners now need hard proof of their surgeries to get past customs in their homeland.

One of the most common procedures is blepharoplasty, which gives the eye a more rounded, western look, and it’s made it making it harder for authorities to identify people based on their pre-op photos on their passports and other forms of ID.  With such unbelievable transformations, it’s hard to blame them.

Follow the slides to see some of the more extreme cases we’ve seen.

RYOT NOTE from Ben

While South Koreans may need to take a good hard look at the mirror when it comes to it’s growing obsession with plastic surgery, there are places where it can do some good beyond the superficial. Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that help’s provide safe surgical care for cleft palate treatment, helping heal children’s smiles forever.  Click the Action Box above this story to learn more, share this story and Become the News!

Tech of PS is pretty advanced in S.Korea. I also consider having plastic surgery in Korea as well.

there are a lot clinics and hospital such as Grand, JW, ID, Banobagi, Girin and etc..

I really confused which hospital or clinic is suitable to me.

Not just in South Korea but all around the world, plastic surgery is showing miraculously amazing results. The amounts of people who are getting these surgeries are rapidly increasing. Since this is a costly procedure, you must read Plastic Surgeon reviews to look for the best surgeons. Only then will you get the best value for you money.

This is scary. I understand doing it for a sense of confidence but as a trend and now a new beauty standard? It's crazy. Imagine how many kids will follow this, generation after generation because they will feel ugly.. It's sad.. No one will no what a real South Korean person even looks like..

There is nothing natural looking about any of them. Asians have distinct features, and when you see people looking like the after pictures it's clear they had surgery. Look at all the music videos...every last one of them went under the knife, there is nothing natural about them. All the boys looks like under age girls, and the girls look like they haven't hit puberty ever...smh. Anyone wanting to marry any Asian male or female should either look at the parents or ask for pictures of them 5-10 years ago, there shall lie the truth.

I have watched the interview of this people in youtube and they say that they want changes because some people used to bullied them. So, they want to be part of their community without feeling left behind and being bullied all the time.

BookLoverInParis

I don't think you should use the word Asian because not all Asian country are doing this kind of tremendous transformation to his/her self. SK people are doing this because bullying is very rampant in their country.

Holy shit pretty much every single one of them look amazing post-surgery. It looks natural and they don't look like plastic surgery freaks. Korea completely destroys American plastic surgeons.

Such a big difference between the before and after. As if they are two different people

If you are Asian, Korea is a definitely a better place to have plastic surgery done.

Contact me if you are looking for a licensed medical tourism translator. I can speak Korean, English, and Chinese. Thanks.

Africans don't like their spread noses, whites don't like their long hook noses that look like bird beaks, and asian's don't like eyes that look like lines. every race has their weaknesses that makes them look ugly in the general sense. I believe when you try to remove imperfect images it improves overall beauty. Noone is trying to look white or black or Asian their trying to look better and i say if you can afford to look better, do it.

I don't see the problem. If people want to change the way they look, the more power to them.  Hell, I can't say I wouldn't get some things adjusted for those inexpensive prices.  Also, I can't say that I have any real knowledge on the subject, and forgive my ignorance...but I don't know if I believe that the surgeries are to make them look more "western".  To me the eye surgeries etc make the women look youthful and cute...not necessarily white.  Like I said I don't know anything about Korean culture, it just seems sort of odd to say that they are trying to look like white people.

In my opinion and for whatever reason these people opted to have this surgery, the work is absolutely first rate.

I'm having a hard time firing out what was done to the guy who is the next to last one shown. His nose is bigger, but did they also move his maxilla and mandible back?! He looks like his face is more vertical. as if they removed the slight facial slant that asians have. His cheekbones also look less wide. That is some major facial reconstruction. They would have had to have broken his skull is several places and reset it.

*discreet in sharing, not "discrete".  No editors at RYOT?  Or no editors that understand the difference?

And really, the concern trolling in this "news" article is amazing.  Who cares what these people spend their money on?  It's their money!  If they want to be more "western", it's their business.  Who made it RYOT's business to tell people what to do?  I know, that's the state of leftist media today, but I don't have to like it.

It's their money, and their faces.  This is certainly less serious than inch diameter grommets in cheeks, or Buick hubcaps inserted into ear lobes.

They'd better find a look they like, as they will have it for quite a while.  If the fads change . . .  Oh well.

Where's the evidence that these before-and-after transformations are real?

I dated a Korean-American in her early 50's who went under the knife on  a regular basis.  Her 70 something mom even went with her sometimes for work, too.   I am in my late 50's and I have to say I admired the work.   As long as I did not have to feel the pain, I saw nothing to complain about.  Actually she said  it really did not hur that much.  She would just go out of town for a week, recover in a luxury hotel near where the works was done, then come home.  She was also a physican and could I guess afford the work.  I certainly did not complain.

Let me just say I'm sick of the Occidents keep saying Asians go through plastic surgery because they want to look white or Asians want lighter skin because they think white people's skin is beautiful. Let me just say BS and their doing plastic surgery has nothing to do with wanting to be white. They're actually off put by overtly white features and it's not their intention to look more Occidental. I mean when white people have lip injections, nose reduction, breast/butt implants and pay money at the salons to get tanned you don't say they do that because they want to look black, but all of a sudden Asians get some plastic surgery and you can't stay silent, have to chime in and say they do that because they want to look white. For me the Occidents commenting on this as Asians wanting to look more westernized is just part of their arrogance, not a fact. Makes me sick when they over analyze this in their own fashion and parade it like they do it due to low self esteem and not comfortable under their skin. As far as I know there are no more proud people on earth than Koreans. Give me an effin' break.

So prevalent has the trend towards plastic surgery become, South Korea now boasts the world's highest per capita use of plastic surgery as now one in every 77 people in South Korea now goes under the knife or needle in a bid to improve their looks. The question of course one ought to ask is why and how did this phenomenon become the must have do? What is it about the dislike of one's 'Asian-ness' and desire to replicate Western aesthetics?

Koreans aren't idolizing "Western" looks, they are aspiring toward a Korean standard of beauty that is quite different from that of the West.  For example, wanting a V shaped chin is not a western standard.  Wanting flawless skin, one of the most important standards, is DEFINITELY not Western, as Koreans tend to have much better skin than Caucasians, thicker and far less wrinkle prone.  The nose is supposed to be North Asian, NOT Caucasian, which they find too big.  The eyes are also supposed to be Northern Asian, and almond shaped, NOT Caucasian.  Not one of the standards of beauty I have witnessed in Korea would I consider "Western."

@BooItsNookies South Koreans and asians in general have faces that are more conducive to plastic surgery.

None of the nose jobs required breaking of the bridge or anything like that, most had 1 or 2

outstanding features that were fixed. Making jowls smaller, eyelids larger, facelifts, collagen and jaw surgery is actually not very difficult as far as plastic surgery is concerned. It's more when someone with a massive hook nose tries to get it much smaller does it look awkward. You're also more used to seeing older people with plastic surgery where you know they're old but it doesn't look like it. Young women you'd likely have no idea that they had surgery done.

@IsabellaTan The problem is DNA doesn't lie, and can't hide the ugly truth. The reproduction process will be a cycle of plastic surgery generations trying to hide their ugly genes.

@linamia Eyes of people with Asian decent are not ugly. Neither is a big or hooked nose. I have seen men and women with larger-than-average or "hooked" noses. These people have traits that distinguish themselves from others in different cultures. The only reason people think themselves ugly because of these traits would be you because you discriminate them and say it looks bad, it convinces people who are not the same as you that they are somehow invalid as a person.

@juststoppinby,  I have yet to meet a single Caucasian who has spend a second of their life thinking about Orientals having plastic surgery done for ANY reason...or Occidentals either......or Sub-Saharan Africans.  I can assure you if they are out there, you will need a magnifying glass to find them.  Other than botched celebrity plastic surgery, I cannot think of EVER discussing plastic surgery relating to anyone I do not personally know.  Most people beyond High School have these things called 'lives' that kind of keeps them too busy to waste mental CPU cycles on such nonsense.

@juststoppinby The article says nothing about wanting to look white.  You typed all that nonsense for nothing.  Congratulations.

@oakdalerider @STLHayekian  I don't really know because the finished work I witnessed took place in America.   By the looks of the trans-formative results seen here though, I have no doubt  the Korean surgeons could do just about anything.  Why do you ask?.  Does the Missus need some work?

@rovibe71 @juststoppinby Some people wake up in the morning just looking for an excuse to be butt-hurt.

I for one could care less why anyone choses to get plastic surgery or not get plastic surgery as long as I don't have to help pay for it.

@rovibe71 @juststoppinbyReally?

"Sadly, it looks like what’s driving this trend is East Asia’s pop culture, which tends to idolize western looks and music in particular."  And I agree with rovibe71.  The most "culturally sensitive" Westerners tend to feel most entitled to pontificate about other cultures they don't actually know anything about.
