A transgender teen has been named a homecoming queen finalist at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, and could be one of the first in the nation when the crown is awarded in two weeks. Cassidy Lynn Campbell, 16, was born male and has felt female her whole life.

“I’m a girl and if my school could recognize me as what I have always wanted … that would be such an accomplishment,” Cassidy, born Lance, told CBS Los Angeles.

Before the announcement, Cassidy had already garnered quite a bit of attention online. Her YouTube videos in which she highlights her transformation from male to female have garnered over 2 million views. But, it also opens her up to hateful comments on social media. Her mom agrees that, while it hasn’t always been easy, being a finalist has shown just how far Cassidy bravery and courage has gotten her and her peers.

“It’s amazing, I just think how far we have all come,” she told CBS.
